Viridor's recycling plant

UK-based recycling and waste management company Viridor has started construction work of its £12.5m plastics recycling facility (PRF) in Rochester, Kent.

The new facility, which will be overlooked by Stadler UK, will have the capacity to process nearly 75,000t of mixed plastics into high-quality clean plastic grades annually. In addition to recovering mixed plastics, the PRF will isolate up to 10,000t of glass from combined input streams a year.

Stadler UK sales manager Trevor Smart said that with the combination of its expertise in the design and delivery of plastics recycling facilities and a potential working relationship with Viridor, the multi-million pound facility would up processing this year.

Viridor has contracted TOMRA Sorting UK to supply equipment to the plant.

TOMRA Sorting UK sales engineer Steve Almond said: "We’re delighted that our technology has been chosen for this state-of-the-art plastics recycling facility, and using TOMRA’s TITECH technology, it is possible to recover high-value, high-purity different types plastic materials including polyethylene and PET, as well as polystyrene, PP and PVC."

Viridor resource management director Herman van der Meij said: "We have had a strong presence in the south east of England for quite some time, developing resource-management infrastructure as well as investing in our people to make sure we deliver a high-quality service and added value to our customers as well as value to society and broader stakeholders. This latest investment is a signal of our real commitment towards helping develop a circular economy in the UK."
