Belgian packaging printer and converter Vitra has invested in two BOBST 20SIX CI flexo printing presses and a BOBST CL850 laminating machine in a bid to expand its manufacturing capability.

The investment decision was taken two years ago, following which the company opted for BOBST machines after evaluating multiple machine manufacturers.

To be installed in Vitra’s facility by the end of this year, the two 20SIX CI flexo presses have the same specifications.

“The superior transparency of solvent based-adhesives often is the preference with transparent laminates.”

Featuring ten colours with a print width of 1,050mm and repeats up to 800mm, the two machines are capable of conducting multiple flexible packaging printing works.

They are equipped with BST-Eltromat inspection systems, inline spectrophotometers and a smartGPS off-press set-up system that can reduce the amount of waste during set-up next to zero.

The smartGPS off-press set-up system also serves as a quality control instrument for printing hardware and plate mounting.

The new 1,350mm-wide BOBST CL 850D multi-technology duplex machine will replace Vitra’s existing laminator installed at the production plant.

Designed for solvent-based applications, the machine also provides the possibility of coating different types of varnishes and lacquers to increase the visual appeal of printing and enhance the substrate’s functional properties necessary for high-end packaging.

Vitra managing director Jan Laeremans said: “The superior transparency of solvent based-adhesives often is the preference with transparent laminates.

“Here, the uniformity of coating must be flawless as even the smallest defects are immediately visible.

“When looking at options, we considered the ability of the BOBST flexo trolley to confer to the end product the required visual uniformity while applying a lower coating weight that has no impact on laminated bond strength.”
