Xeikon has introduced a digital printing solution for pouches used in the food, beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
The new process aims to simplify the conventional complicated process of making pouches that comprise several layers of material.
It involves digitally printing the text and graphics on a thermal laminate to develop the outside layer of the pouch.
Multiple layers are developed by lamination with a series of barriers for protection before the final assembly of the pouch in the manufacturing process.
The overall method offers a fast turnaround solution, broad lamination construction, and reduced developmental costs.
Xeikon Marketing vice-president Filip Weymans said: “This is a prime example of what we call ‘customer-driven innovation’.

By GlobalData“By focusing on this application, we are supporting our customers’ requirements and also responding to the current trends in consumer preference. This development takes our digital production portfolio to the next level.”
The latest offering addresses the growing demand for pouch packaging due to their sustainability, light weight, and shelf impact.
A pouch is said to have a ‘product-to-package’ ratio of 35:1, enabling it to carry up to 35 times its own weight. It can also be produced in different shapes and sizes according to the need of the brand.
This digital printing uses Xeikon’s digital dry toner technology that enables JIT production, versioning and last-minute adaptations on the fly. It also allows the printer to print variable data information in both single and full colour.
Xeikon’s technology reduces start-up costs and changeover costs.
The digital process provides a minimum of 4,000-lumen crossover points for flexo and the digital process. It will help in managing busy print operations.
