2M Group of Companies has announced the launch of a new business unit to promote biomaterial technologies.

Dubbed Sustainable Packaging Technologies, the new segment is set to address the increasing consumer demand for sustainable packaging alternatives.

The new business will utilise the experience of the group’s materials sciences company Banner Chemicals, providing 'plug-and-play' biobased packaging solutions.

These solutions will replace traditional plastics in a variety of consumer products.

The business unit is led by James Nelson, who has more than two decades of experience in the packaging and material science sectors.

Headquartered in Milton Keynes, UK, Sustainable Packaging Technologies aims to build a portfolio of biomaterial technologies that can be integrated into current packaging manufacturing processes by leveraging the company's extensive network and expertise.

Nelson said: “As we launch Sustainable Packaging Technologies, I’m thrilled to lead our team in driving sustainable innovation within the packaging industry.

“Our biobased solutions will offer brands effective alternatives to plastic, delivering environmental responsibility without compromising on performance.

“We aim to act as a trusted partner between R&D [research and development] material science companies and leading packaging manufacturers and converters who are keen to support brands to deliver on their sustainability pledges.”

Meanwhile, 2M Group of Companies has secured an exclusive licence to deploy Xampla’s Morro Coating in Europe.

This plastic-free material is derived from natural plant polymers, offering a fully biodegradable and recyclable alternative to traditional plastics.

Morro Coating is also safe for food contact and boasts high strength and barrier properties.

As part of the agreement, Sustainable Packaging Technologies will oversee the production and distribution of Morro Coating throughout Europe, generating multi-tonne production at the Milton Keynes facility.

Sustainable Packaging Technologies has secured strategic partnerships and investments from Innovate UK and SSPP Government funding.
