Ahlstrom, a provider of masking and packaging tape base papers, is exploring making investments in tape base paper saturation and release coating capabilities.

The company has initiated a feasibility study to identify the most suitable approach to develop these capabilities, with a decision expected shortly after its completion.

The potential investment comes in response to the increasing customer demand for the solutions, particularly in the Americas.

The study aims to potentially enhance Ahlstrom's tape product offering by including speciality base papers such as saturated and coated creped base papers.

These papers are used in various end applications, including packaging tapes and the automotive and aerospace industries, among others.

The company's existing fibre-based masking tape backings are known for their durability and longevity.

Ahlstrom offers repulpable and recyclable fibre-based packaging tape backing alternatives, helping its customers achieve their sustainability goals.

This investment would further extend Ahlstrom's sustainable offerings by introducing products with improved properties such as better recyclability and an increased use of renewable materials.

Ahlstrom tape business vice-president Sohrab Kazemahvazi said: "We are launching this study as a step to investigate the best way to access the capability that supports the needs of our customers now and in the future.

“With the potential investment, we will not only be a leader in offering speciality base papers for tape applications, but we can also generate more value for our customers by offering ready-to-adhesive coat papers.”

In July this year, the company decided to move ahead with the closure of its plant in Bousbecque, France.
