Discount retailer Aldi UK has launched its own-brand Greyson’s London Dry Gin in paper packaging, reportedly becoming the first supermarket to do so.

The supermarket chain has teamed up with British company Frugalpac for the packaging.

With aims to reduce carbon impact, Frugalpac leverages recycled paper that is both lightweight and recyclable for its packaging solutions.

The bottle, composed of 94% recycled paperboard, features a food-grade pouch to hold the gin.

In addition, Aldi's new gin bottle is shatterproof and said to be five times lighter when compared with standard glass bottles.

Aldi UK Buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “We’re thrilled to be launching our well-loved Greyson’s gin in paper packaging - a significant step towards fostering sustainable change. The paper bottled wine has been a hit with shoppers and we’re excited to extend this out into the spirits category.”

The new gin bottles will be available across the retailer’s stores nationwide from 23 May 2024 and through Click & Collect services.

Greyson’s London Dry Gin, priced at £13.99 ($17.70) for a 70cl bottle, features bright citrus and juniper flavours.

This initiative is part of Aldi's broader commitment to sustainability, which includes the introduction of paper wine bottles and flat recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) wine bottles

Last month, Aldi introduced a 100% rPET bottle for its own-brand soft drinks and water range in England and Wales.

In addition to the paper gin bottle, Aldi is changing the wine labels across its Grapevine range.

Its new labels are Forest Stewardship Council-certified and made from 100% recycled paper fibre, with plans to extend this practice to all permanent lines by 2026.
