British budget supermarket chain Aldi is set to trial four new loose fruit and vegetable produce range in an attempt to further minimise plastic waste.

The four items that will be sold loose, without any plastic packaging, include garlic, limes, lemons and oranges.

The new range will be rolled out starting from this week.

Initially, this line will be available across select Aldi stores in the UK.

The retailer said its stores located in North East, Yorkshire, South East, London and Cumbria will offer the new loose garlic and limes range.

In addition, select stores in the East of England, East Midlands and London will sell loose garlic, limes, oranges and lemons.

If this change is implemented across all the stores in the country, the retailer said it can further contribute to eliminate up to 94 tonnes of plastic packaging every annum.

The supermarket chain is already providing loose produce options for various other items, such as avocadoes, potatoes and peppers.

Aldi Plastics and Packaging director Luke Emery said: “At Aldi we are committed to removing plastic packaging wherever possible and we are constantly reviewing ways to make a real difference.

“By trialling these packaging-free produce lines, we hope to help customers cut back on unnecessary plastic when shopping at Aldi.”

The latest move follows Aldi’s recent announcement to eliminate all the single use cutlery from its Food to Go range available across all its stores in the UK.

In a similar move to reducing plastic use by up to 73%, Aldi last month announced about trialling vacuum and flow-wrap packaging for its beef mince products.

Flow wrap packaging trial will commence in November, while vacuum packaging has already been rolled out at select Aldi stores.
