Aldi will implement the changes across all UK stores.

Supermarket chain Aldi has enhanced its commitment to sustainability as it removes all single-use cutlery from its Food to Go range.

The initiative will reduce 10.5 million or 28 tonnes (t) of wooden forks in salads and pasta bowls, resulting in significant reduction on the retailer’s single-use items.

Aldi will implement the changes across all UK stores.

With aims to reduce environmental impact, the retailer encourages customers to switch to reusable alternative as a permanent replacement.

Aldi Plastics and Packaging director Luke Emery said: “At Aldi, we are constantly reviewing ways to become more environmentally friendly, and this is another positive change to help us make a difference.

“This will result in a significant reduction in single use materials and help customers to make more environmentally friendly choices.”

The announcement comes closely after the supermarket chain switched to colourless milk caps across all of its 990 UK stores.

The move is intended to further improve the recyclability of the bottles and it will result in reusing another 200t of high-density polythene (rHDPE) in the bottle tops to create new milk bottles.

Recently, Aldi announced trialling vacuum and flow-wrap packaging for its beef mince products to minimise plastic use by up to 73%.

In May this year, the retailer announced that it had removed the glass and metal packaging components from its own-label handwash, creating a fully recyclable product in a bid to reduce packaging waste.

APAC region dominating the flexible packaging market

The global flexible packaging market will be valued at $112.4 Billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% by 2030, per GlobalData. The increasing demand for packaged food and beverages is one of the prominent factors driving the market growth. The APAC region has emerged as the market leader (>50% share in 2023) due to easy availability of packaging material and low labor costs.
