German supermarket chain Aldi has announced updated packaging for its own-brand toilet wipes in a bid to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

The company said that it is adding the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer to the product's packaging.

The update comes following the addition of this potentially life-saving information to all its packs of toilet roll as part of Bowel Cancer UK’s #GetOnARoll campaign.

The packaging on both products features brief information regarding bowel cancer symptoms. It also allows shoppers to discover more about these signs and access assistance offered through the Bowel Cancer UK website by scanning a QR code.

Aldi UK Buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “By adding the symptoms of bowel cancel [cancer] onto both our toilet roll and wipe packs, we hope to help even more people become familiar with what signs to look out for.

“We understand that spotting the signs early is vital, so if we can raise awareness and direct people to Bowel Cancer UK for more information, we hope to make a real difference.”

Bowel cancer is said to be the fourth most common cancer in the UK and affects thousands of people annually.

Early detection of the disease is critical for treating and curing it.

Bowel Cancer UK CEO Genevieve Edwards said: “The disease is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, but currently fewer than 40% of people are diagnosed at the earlier stages, when it is easier to treat.”

In July this year, Aldi announced its plans to replace the ‘Use By’ labels with ‘Best Before’ dates on its milk bottles to help reduce waste, excluding the filtered milk range.
