European aluminium supplier Aludium in its partnership with global wine and spirits closures manufacturer Amcor Capsules has developed a low-carbon aluminium product for use in screw caps.

This certified and independently verified aluminium product is expected to have at least 50% less carbon footprint when compared to the average carbon footprint of primary aluminium materials sold and used across Europe.

According to International Aluminium, primary aluminium in Europe has 8.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) equivalent per tonne of aluminium while the companies said their new product has less than four tonnes of the CO₂ equivalent per tonne of aluminium.

Amcor Capsules sustainability director Bertrand Daru said: “We are passionate about bringing more sustainable products to market.

“We are already leading the market with 96% of our products being recycle-ready. But we want to go further and reduce the levels of CO₂ emitted during manufacturing.

“Our aluminium screw caps now offer a more sustainable alternative for wine and spirits brands and distributors.”

Aludium says greenhouse gas emissions made by its aluminium product have already been verified by a third party and are certified as per the International Organization for Standardization's-14067-1:2018 standards.

It also adheres to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standards.

These credentials were acquired after the completion of an extensive process of certification undertaken by both Amcor Capsules and Aludium.

These certifications will provide total transparency of the aluminium’s carbon footprint to both Aludium and Amcor Capsules' customers.
