Amcor Capsules, a designer and manufacturer of capsules, closures, and eco-responsible foils, has announced the upcoming launch of a plastic-free foil composed of aluminium and paper.

This new product, ESSENTIELLE, is set to debut in October 2024. It is a result of a collaboration with Moët & Chandon, part of the LVMH group.

The ESSENTIELLE foil is a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic solutions, boasting a 31% lower carbon footprint.

It is made from paper sourced in Europe and contains about 60% aluminium, which is not only recyclable but also maintains the aesthetic appeal of the packaging.

The recyclability of aluminium, especially when combined with glass, has been validated by the TREE assessment tool by CITEO in France.

Amcor Capsules has ensured that the introduction of ESSENTIELLE will not affect the bottling and packaging processes of its customers, maintaining productivity levels.

Moët & Chandon is one of the leading producers in the Champagne wine region, with production lines capable of handling more than 12,000 bottles per hour.

The production of ESSENTIELLE will commence at the Mareuil-sur-Aÿ site in Champagne.

The foil will initially feature texturing options to preserve the premium appearance of sparkling wine bottles without compromising packaging efficiency.

In the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, a smooth finish variant is expected to be available.

Amcor Capsules managing director Yannick Magnon said: “The launch of the ESSENTIELLE plastic-free foil draws attention to the expertise at our Mareuil-sur-Aÿ site, which specialises in the manufacture of foils and is located in the heart of the Champagne region.

“Amcor Capsules is drawing on ESSENTIELLE to revolutionise the industry by offering a recyclable, plastic-free solution that suits the fast pace of their packaging lines, confirming its major role among wine-growing players, here in Champagne.”

The development of ESSENTIELLE aligns with Amcor Capsules’ TRANSPARENCE programme, initiated in July 2023.

Last month, Amcor Capsules announced the incorporation of more than 90% recycled tin content into its premium tin capsules and sparkling foils.
