Anchor Packaging, a North American manufacturer of thermoformers, has joined the Cyclyx consortium.

This collaboration is set to further enhance recycling pathways and transform the recycling of food-grade plastic.

Founded in 1963, Anchor Packaging designs and manufactures rigid food containers and cling film.

The company leverages high-performance materials that offer food protection and reduce food waste.

Cyclyx, a post-use plastic innovation company, will support Anchor's post-consumer Drive for 5 collection efforts with the aim to expand its audience base across the value chain and to obtain increased volumes of polypropylene (PP) material.

Anchor launched Drive for 5 in 2021 to develop new pathways for collecting PP.

The company will also support Cyclyx's 10to90 landfill-diversion programmes.

The company will also take part in initiating new pilot projects.

These initiatives are crucial for both companies as they work together to design new programmes that will increase the recovery of valuable post-consumer materials.

Anchor Packaging marketing and custom products EVP Richard Daniels said: "Partnering with Cyclyx was an easy decision because their mission and extensive experience enable us to accelerate our work in advancing foodservice sustainability.

"While packaging's carbon footprint is just a small fraction of the meal itself, in many cases less than 1%, it is uniquely positioned to provide an outsized benefit by protecting food quality to prevent food waste. Improving the recovery of valuable, recyclable food-grade materials only adds to the positive impact packaging provides."

With an aim to reduce waste, Anchor Packaging recaptures nearly all materials used in production, resulting in less than 0.5% waste.
