Metal and glass packaging supplier Ardagh Group has published its 2024 Sustainability Report for its Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP) and Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) divisions.

The report outlines the company's progress towards its 2030 Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goals, highlighting a significant reduction in scope 3 emissions and advancements in its decarbonisation efforts.

AGP aims for 100% adoption of renewable electricity by 2030, with 16% progress achieved to date.

For scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a 42% reduction target has been set, with 12% progress achieved. Scope 3 GHG emissions are targeted for a 12.3% reduction, and this goal was met in 2023.

The division also aims for a 26% reduction in water usage intensity by 2030. The report states a 91% increase in this measure from 2020.

Its goal of achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030 has made 32% progress to the target.

Meanwhile, AMP’s goal for renewable electricity usage by 2030 is also 100%, with 20% progress achieved so far.

The division aims for a 42% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 and the latest report shows a 14% increase from 2020.

It targets a 12.3% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 2030 and this stated target was achieved last year as well.

AMP aims for a 20% reduction in water usage intensity and has reported 7% progress to the target. The goal of achieving zero waste to landfill by 2025 has reached 75% progress to the target.

AMP and AGP recently entered into a joint virtual power purchase agreement with Sunnic Lighthouse and its parent company, ENERPARC. This agreement secures a solar energy allocation in Germany to power AMP’s production facilities and AGP’s NextGen Furnace.

AGP CSO Alex Winters said: "We aim to achieve our 2030 emissions targets through a broad range of actions outlined in the roadmaps.

"We are quite proud of our progress to date, and we have confidence in our initiatives and partnerships to fulfil our commitments."

Ardagh Group operates 61 metal and glass production facilities across 16 countries, employing more than 20,000 people, with sales exceeding $9bn in 2023.

In November last year, the company released its 2023 Substantiality Report indicating its progress towards achieving environmental and sustainability targets during the 2021 and 2022 period.

Last month, AGP-North America teamed up with the Don’t Trash Glass programme in Chicago, US.

This partnership seeks to accelerate recycling initiatives and boost the incorporation of recycled materials in the production of glass bottles, both in Chicago and beyond.
