Ardagh Group has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, highlighting its progress towards achieving environmental and sustainability targets during the 2021 and 2022 period.

The report details the company’s progress in minimising its water and energy consumption, as well as reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its operations.

The company said it has successfully implemented science-based emissions reduction and social sustainability strategies for both its businesses - Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) and Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP).

Last year, AMP and AGP secured the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) approval for their respective near-future goals to minimise scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 2030.

Ardagh also expanded reporting on its sustainability goals and progress under the Global Reporting Initiative's standards.

Under another initiative during the reported period, the company developed and introduced a sophisticated process of preheating glass raw materials to save up to 15% of energy.

Ardagh has installed this system, which has the capacity to heat the affiliated material batch to 300°C, across five of its facilities, with plans to launch it for three more plants over the next three years.

The cost of equipping this system is €2m per site.

Ardagh chair Paul Coulson said: “Our products, made from permanent materials and therefore inherently sustainable and circular in nature, position Ardagh and our operating businesses strongly within the circular economy.

“We remain focused on progressing our sustainability roadmap and will continue to take action to lead the transition to the low-carbon circular economy, of which we are proud that our packaging products are a part of.”

Ardagh also secured a Platinum rating from EcoVadis for two consecutive years.

Ardagh has received ENERGY STAR building certification for its distribution centre in California’s Fairfield, US.

Global food packaging industry witnessing an uptick in demand for personalized packaging

In 2022, flexible packaging was the most used pack material, followed by rigid plastics. The demand for eco-friendly packaging is on the rise, stimulated by consumers’ increasing focus on sustainability. Personalized packaging is becoming popular as consumers appreciate products tailored to their needs or preferences. In the food packaging industry, personalization can be done to amplify brand appeal in form of personalized bags, stickers, or boxes.
