Arnold Bread, a part of Bimbo Bakeries USA, has introduced new bread bags featuring 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

The polyethylene bags, produced from US Food and Drug Administration-compliant PCR resins, have been implemented across the brand’s Organic line.

SCS Global Services, a third-party testing, inspection, and certification company, has verified the new bags according to its standards.

The new packaging, when compared to its predecessor, lowers the company's carbon footprint and reduces its use of fossil fuels.

Bimbo Bakeries USA Premium Bread marketing director Allan Hoffman said: "A commitment to sustainability is baked into everything we do, and it is a company principle to nourish a better world.

"Our brand is constantly looking for ways to make a positive environmental impression on our consumers and the communities that we serve.

"We're proud that our new PCR bread bags are the first of their kind in North America and look forward to continuing to identify new opportunities for sustainable impact."

The new packaging is in line with Bimbo Bakeries USA's overarching sustainability vision.

The company has also matched 100% of its electricity usage for US operations with renewable wind energy and received certification for superior energy efficiency at 18 Bimbo Bakeries USA facilities.

Arnold's premium bread varieties are available at major retailers across the US.

Understanding the role and impact of the metaverse in the packaging sector

Many of the vital metaverse technologies are already being used or piloted by packaging companies, who have brought together AI, AR, VR, cloud, the IoT, and other technologies to monitor and maintain key assets remotely. The sector could also use immersive metaverse solutions to optimize packaging design and quality control—testing prototypes in a virtual world before bringing them to market. Another disruptive benefit will involve using underlying blockchain and digital twin technologies to assist in creating more transparent and traceable supply chains.
