Berlin Packaging, a hybrid packaging supplier, has achieved an impressive feat of selling more than 12,000 tonnes (t) of recycled plastic and glass packaging in 2023.
The company reported the achievement in its 2023 Sustainability Report released yesterday (12 June).
Over the year, the company said it sold more than 1,700t of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and 10,700t of PCR glass.
Berlin Packaging also collaborated with Curie to develop custom deodorant packaging made entirely from PCR plastic, aligning with the brand's objective to utilise 100% PCR materials.
Additionally, the company developed a 'vortex' bottle for Turtle Wax, incorporating 30% PCR plastic, which has saved more than 116,000lb of virgin resin each year.
In 2023, Berlin Packaging reduced its scope 1 emissions by 21% and scope 2 emissions by 6% globally, with 2022 as the baseline.
The company aims to cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030.
During the year, the company also conducted more than 70 life cycle assessments to assist brands in understanding the environmental impact of their packaging choices.
Furthermore, Berlin Packaging invested in renewable energy by purchasing 4,645MWh of renewable energy credits, which covered its electricity use in the Americas for 2023.
The company's goal is to have 20 of its strategic warehouses certified as zero waste by 2030.
Berlin Packaging sustainability vice-president Balaji Jayaseelan said: "Our vision is to lead the future of sustainable packaging. In the last two years, we have onboarded team members with expertise across diverse functions - engineering, marketing, manufacturing, design, materials and sourcing, supply chain, and more.
"Our team is collectively focused on a shared sustainability purpose and achieving real impact at scale."
Headquartered in Illinois, US, Berlin Packaging supplies glass, plastic, and metal containers and closures across all industries.
In January this year, the company acquired Alpack, a family-owned food packaging supplier situated in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.
