The European business of sustainable packaging company Berry Global has made a multimillion investment to commission the new conversion line at its Steinfeld factory in Germany.

The investment is designed to address the growing demand for its NorDiVent form-fill-seal (FFS) polyethylene (PE) sacks for powdered products.

As part of the investment, the company refurbished the site's production hall and installed advanced conversion machinery.

According to the company, this expansion will scale up production capacity and enable it to offer faster response times while maintaining the quality of its NorDiVent film.

Berry sales director Frank Heseding said: "We have seen strong demand for NorDiVent across our customer base in recent years, particularly now with its ability to incorporate recycled plastic content from our Sustane range of recycled polymers.

"With this new line, we will be able to maintain the highest levels of quality and service, including the customisation of the film for specific market requirements."

NorDiVent FFS sacks are designed to provide a dust and moisture-free solution for the packaging of various products such as cement, chemicals, dry mixes foodstuffs, and others.

The film’s durable construction is claimed to enable outdoor storage, which is not possible with traditional paper-based alternatives, and offers high tear resistance, thereby reducing spillage and waste in the supply chain.

NorDiVent, which is part of Berry's B Circular Range, can contain up to 50% post-consumer recycled plastic in the form of Berry's Sustane portfolio.

The film is also recyclable where PE film collections are available, the company in a statement said.

NorDiVent offers various options, including antistatic properties, and supports up to eight-colour printing for enhanced branding and shelf presence.

It also enables simpler changeover between products and superior operability.

"This increase in capacity underlines our commitment to continue delivering the highest-quality products to our customers to meet their product handling and protection requirements while also supporting their sustainability objectives," added Heseding.

In April this year, Berry Global introduced new lightweight closures specifically designed for the protein powder market.
