BEWI, a sustainable packaging and insulation solutions provider, has expanded its recycling capacity with the opening of a new circular hub in Norrköping, Sweden.
The Norrköping facility is seen as a critical step towards BEWI's goal of becoming a fully circular company, reinforcing its pledge to drive the transition to a circular economy.
The factory will reportedly increase its expanded polystyrene (EPS) recycling capabilities by 40%.
Featuring advanced recycling extrusion technology, the circular hub is a transformation of BEWI's former insulation facility in Norrköping.
Strategically located for efficient logistics, the hub not only serves external customers but also enhances BEWI's downstream business units by incorporating recycled materials into its products, thereby reducing its carbon dioxide footprint.
BEWI Circular segment EVP and head Aljosa Krizman said: "We are proud to present our new, state-of-the-art recycling facility here in Norrköping. We are well-positioned to meet the growing demand for products with recycled content, driven by both the market and legislations.”
The company is aiming to increase the collection and use of recycled EPS in its product offering to address customers’ demands for more circular solutions, as well as international targets and the need for recycled content.
Since 2018, the company has been investing in circularity with a focus on enhancing its circular capabilities.
The company collects and recycles used EPS packaging and insulation materials such as fish boxes and construction debris.
In 2023, BEWI claimed it recycled approximately 27,000 tonnes (t) of used EPS, which represents about 90% of the fish boxes it produced.
BEWI CEO Christian Bekken said: "We collect and convert used EPS into high-quality recycled raw material, effectively contributing to increase recycling and establish a closed-loop system. With the circular hub in Norrköping, we enhance our recycling platform, expand our product offering and strengthen our market position.”
In April this year, BEWI launched new EPS raw material grades and EPS fish boxes with superior environmental footprints.
