The facility has more than six times the annual capacity than the current site being replaced.

Waste management company Biffa has launched a new hazardous waste transfer station in Hertfordshire, UK, to enhance its service capacity in the region.

The newly opened Welham Green depot has significantly expanded the company's hazardous waste management capabilities in the Home Counties and South of England.

Replacing an older site, the new facility features more than six times the annual capacity and aims to reduce carbon emissions for both Biffa and its clients.

The station processes hazardous and select non-hazardous materials from various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and retail.

It features a dedicated fireproof zone for flammable waste and channels the waste to specialist processors and recyclers.

Welham Green is part of Biffa's extensive 24/7 specialist services network, which includes eight transfer stations, six treatment facilities, and a substantial tanker fleet equipped with specialist vehicles, called ADRs, for hazardous waste transport.

The station's design will cut down on vehicle journeys and is projected to save nearly 930 tonnes per annum (tpa) of carbon emissions.

This initiative aligns with Biffa's broader strategy to provide comprehensive waste management solutions, including consultancy on packaging best practices.

Biffa Specialist Services regional general manager Simon Dale said: “Our new transfer station at Welham Green means we now have the capacity to offer our customers in the South of England a much simpler and more sustainable solution to their hazardous and difficult non-hazardous waste requirements.

“Having a larger, centralised, hub for our South East operations also means our trucks are travelling fewer miles, resulting in significant fleet-related carbon savings that help reduce our customers’ scope 3 emissions and contribute to our own journey to net zero.

“Alongside hazardous materials, our specialist services team also handles large-scale construction and event waste, as well as providing food and packaging solutions, and tailored services for manufacturers.”

Recently, Biffa launched a nationwide recycling service for the disposal of single-use paper cups, helping local businesses minimise their environmental impact.
