Sustainable materials company Bioaqualife has launched a shrink wrap tape to provide the performance of traditional marine grade shrink wrap tapes while safely biodegrading in natural environments.
The solution is designed for taping and sealing seams in all shrink-wrapping applications, including marine, containment, construction and total winterisation [making ready for winter] applications.
Made in the US, the tape's flexible 9mm biodegradable polyethylene backing and high-tack rubber adhesive aims to provide secure bonds and easy wrapping.
The product was tested on all traditional shrink-wrap surfaces and performed in below-zero temperature conditions.
Other test results include a 75-ounce (oz) per inch adhesion to stainless steel surfaces, 35oz per inch adhesion to backing and 25lb per inch tensile strength.
The tape contains no heavy metals and is offered in 3-inch cores in white and transparent colour options.
Bioaqualife general manager Carsten Petersen highlights that the product “can withstand sun, salt and weathering but will break down naturally when disposed of correctly in a landfill - reducing waste and preventing microplastics from entering ecosystems."
Founded in 2023 and based in Rhode Island, US, the company’s other products include shrink films, agricultural films and construction and packaging tapes.
The tape industry is rife with product innovations, including water-based, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes and sustainable fibre-based tapes as an alternative to plastic.
