Host Defense Mushrooms maker Fungi Perfecti has revealed that its MycoBrew single-use packets have received commercially compostable certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
The single-use packets are made from a custom-crafted cellulose-based material.
The packaging was subjected to extensive testing to confirm its adherence to international compostability standards.
The MycoBrew line, which includes branded Coffee, Matcha, Cocoa, and Mocha options, was launched in 2021 after three years of development.
The packaging was designed to offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional single-use packets, providing excellent oxygen and moisture barrier protection, extended shelf life, and strong seal strength.
Customers can dispose of their MycoBrew packets in bins for organic and yard waste pickup where available, or in any facility that accepts commercially compostable packaging.
However, the company encourages customers to check local services as the availability of composting options may vary by location.
Fungi Perfecti Sales & Marketing director Betsy Bullman said: “Every time we consider launching a new product, we always take into consideration what the life cycle of the packaging will look like.
“While we were eager to launch our MycoBrew line, we also didn't want to contribute to the growing concern of single-use packaging.
“We decided to wait until we were able to develop a brand new material that falls in alignment with our sustainability goals. We're so excited that this cutting-edge material has achieved BPI commercially compostable certification!”
Host Defense MycoBrew drink mixes are available for purchase on hostdefense.com, fungi.com, and at health food stores across the US.
