British Sugar, a producer of sugar for the British and Irish food and beverage markets, is set to utilise Sidel’s end-of-line turnkey solution.

The tailor-made solution aims to support British Sugar, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods that works with 2,300 growers, to meet retailer expectations and market requirements.

British Sugar required a large-scale operations replacement as it reportedly processes around 8m tonnes of sugar beet to produce up to 1.2m tonnes of sugar annually.

Its former system was more than 38 years old and had to be compacted for flexible case packaging and palletising within a tight plant area.

This area needed to be capable of handling multiple pallet and format types to accommodate single sugar bags to new shelf-ready secondary packaging.

Sidel will deliver a full turnkey solution from the sugar bagging outlet through to delivery at warehousing. Two further phases of installation will be completed at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

Sidel account manager Bastien Carcenac commented: “To define the right project scope of supply, the British Sugar extended pluridisciplinary team involved in the project pushed and supported the Sidel team to find the most compact, flexible and efficient solution.”

British Sugar project integration manager James Warby: “We needed a partner with engineering and design expertise as the challenge was complex due to the building constraints combined with our high level of technical specifications.”

Sidel recently launched a new machine for large PET containers called EvoBLOW XL, designed for multiple markets.
