US-headquartered plant-based beverage company Califia Farms has announced the transition of its bottles in the US and Canada to 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

This significant move is set to lower the brand's greenhouse gas emissions by at least 19% and its energy consumption by 50%.

The packaging update spans Califia's extensive range of refrigerated plant milks, creamers, coffees, and teas, marking a commitment to environmental sustainability and reduced plastic demand.

With the conversion of Califia's bottles to rPET in North America now complete, the brand will begin consumer communication about the change.

The new packaging will feature QR codes that direct users to a dedicated rPET page and the company's sustainability reports.

These resources highlight Califia's collaborations with sustainability leaders such as the Climate Collaborative and How2Recycle.

Califia CEO Dave Ritterbush said: “This transition to 100% rPET represents a significant commitment to soften Califia’s environmental footprint. While Califia is an inherently sustainable business thanks to the plant-based products we produce, we recognise the importance of ongoing, forward progress in our sustainability journey.

“By moving to 100% rPET for our iconic curvy bottle, we're taking a major step in reducing our reliance on virgin plastic and advancing the principles of a circular economy."

From 2019 to 2023, the company engaged in various sustainability efforts, including lightweighting projects led by an internal 'Green Team'.

These efforts have resulted in a reduction in plastic usage across the company's caps, bottles, and labels.

Califia sustainability vice-president Ella Rosenbloom said: "Replacing virgin plastic with recycled plastic is a critical part of 'closing the loop' in a circular economy.

"When it comes to circularity, we're focused on accelerating change and thoughtfully considering how best to innovate, circulate, and eliminate the plastic that we use.”
