Canadian packaging company Cascades has rolled out a new line of sustainable produce baskets with flaps, designed to offer a greener alternative for the produce sector.

The new produce baskets, made of corrugated cardboard using up to 100% recycled fibres, have been introduced to replace harder-to-recycle packaging and contribute to a circular economy.

It offers enhanced product protection and ensures consumer convenience while helping them reduce their environmental footprint.

In addition, the baskets feature a unique closure system that secures the contents without sacrificing visibility, ensuring fruits and vegetables remain intact throughout the supply chain.

This design also minimises the need for consumers to handle the products, promoting better hygiene and product quality.

Cascades’ new range is available in two models and four sizes, ranging from the new half dry quart snack size to the one-litre size.

The company said that the produce baskets are versatile enough to market a broad range of fruits, vegetables, and other produce, including berries, tomatoes, and tree-grown fruits.

Furthermore, the multiple customisation options available for these baskets provide a competitive edge, allowing produce brands to stand out on the shelves with different printing options such as lithographic, flexographic, and digital.

Cascades Containerboard Packaging president and COO Charles Malo said: “These new corrugated basket formats for fresh fruit and vegetables enhance our innovative product offering for the produce sector, while allowing us to continue to meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility.”

Last May, Cascades started the production of 100% recycled containerboard at its containerboard packaging plant in Bear Island, Virginia, US.
