Celestial Seasonings, a US-based speciality tea brand, has announced a commitment to remove the plastic overwrap from the boxes of more than 130 of its tea varieties.

This initiative is projected to eliminate up to 165,000lb of plastic waste from landfills this year alone, equating to approximately 16,000 miles of plastic, according to the company.

Celestial Seasonings marketing director Emily Rosen said: "We are thrilled to announce this exciting step towards reducing our environmental footprint.

"While we are removing the plastic overwrap from our boxes, we're still delivering the same great taste that people expect when they enjoy our teas. It's just one more way we're providing magic in your mug."

Celestial's stringless and tagless pillow tea bags, along with its recyclable boxes, already reportedly contribute to saving 3.5 million pounds of waste from landfills annually.

The latest commitment from the tea brand aligns with the sustainable packaging goals of its parent company, Hain Celestial.

The company says it is planning to eliminate excess packaging materials and improve the recyclability of its packaging globally.

Founded in 1969, Celestial Seasonings offers more than 90 varieties of green, black, rooibos, and chai teas.

The brand offers non-genetically modified organism teas with no artificial flavours or preservatives.

It serves 1.6 billion cups of tea each year and is available on six continents.
