The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has initiated a 90-day consultation to seek feedback on the proposed guidance for labelling plant-based alternatives to egg products.

This move comes as the Canadian government plans to develop clear labelling and representation standards for plant-based food in response to the growing consumer demand for these products.

The new guidance is designed to help the industry adhere to legislation and ensure consistency in the promotion of these foods.

It also aims to empower consumers to make informed choices aligned with their dietary preferences.

The proposed guidance outlines how to differentiate plant-based alternatives from traditional egg products.

It details the use of words, images, and packaging to convey an accurate impression of the product that could not be construed as deceptive.

Feedback is being sought on whether the guidance provides sufficient information for food businesses to comply with labelling legislation for plant-based egg alternatives.

While the guidance is industry-focused, the CFIA also welcomes input from consumers and other organisations.

Understanding consumer priorities and perceptions of plant-based foods is crucial for the industry to position its products effectively and avoid confusion or misleading impressions.

Stakeholders, including industry representatives and other interested parties, are encouraged to share their views by the 28 October deadline.

The CFIA has been providing tools to assist with regulatory compliance such as the Industry Labelling Tool.

This resource offers guidance on various aspects of food labelling, including the common name on labels, general labelling and advertising principles, and the use of images and logos.
