Bottled water provider Chlorophyll Water has joined forces with plastic action platform rePurpose Global to recover ocean plastic.

Through the new partnership, the sale of each bottle of Chlorophyll Water leads to the recovery of the equivalent of one ocean-bound plastic bottle, which is then recycled. The overall aim is to reduce the need for virgin plastic in the market.

Chlorophyll Water bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic certified by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority.

The company uses Avery Dennison's CleanFlake technology for their labels, enhancing the recyclability of PET [polyethylene terephthalate] by ensuring labels separate cleanly during recycling, resulting in high-quality PET flakes.

As the first bottled water in the US to pass the strict Clean Label Project Certification process, Chlorophyll Water has undergone third-party testing for more than 90 potential environmental contaminants including heavy metals, pesticide residues, plasticisers such as bisphenol A, bisphenol S and phthalates, and other chemicals.

Chlorophyll Water founder Matt Levine commented: "We aim to significantly impact the plastic waste issue and reduce the use of virgin, fossil-fuel-based packaging. Our partnership with rePurpose Global further supports this progressive mission.”

rePurpose Global has recovered more than 25m kilograms of plastic waste from the environment, protecting vulnerable coastal regions across the Americas, Africa and Asia.

The company recently partnered with Vital Pet Life to fund the removal of 18 grams of ocean-bound plastic per bottle it sells through rePurpose’s Impact Guarantee programme.
