Circulus Holdings, a producer of post-consumer resin (PCR) from recycled low-density polyethylene, has announced receiving a letter of non-objection (LNO) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Ardmore, Oklahoma, US-based facility.

The LNO certifies that the company's proprietary recycling process at the Ardmore facility can produce 100% PCR for direct food contact packaging applications.

Circulus CEO Mike Dulin said: "The FDA granting our second LNO is an important milestone for Circulus as it will strengthen our ability to produce resins for a wide variety of consumer-facing products and packaging.

“This independent validation positions us to further serve the strong demand we are seeing across the sustainable packaging industry. We are excited to continue to drive advancement and leadership in the circular economy."

In addition to its Ardmore facility, Circulus received an LNO from the FDA for its Riverbank, California plant in January 2023.

With a production capacity of more than 40 million pounds of PCR annually, the Riverbank facility’s recycling process is certified for producing fully recycled PCR that is suitable for direct food contact packaging applications, including direct contact for room temperature, refrigerated, and frozen goods.

Circulus claimed that its PCR production is estimated to save the equivalent of 30 million gallons of gasoline, and lowers carbon emissions by almost 88% more than the production of virgin resin.

The company, headquartered in Houston, Texas, specialises in converting plastic waste into PCR using mechanical recycling solutions. It presently has factories under development across the US.
