Beverage company Coca-Cola India has announced the launch of 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)-made bottles in the carbonated beverage category.
The rPET bottles for Coca Cola have been introduced in two different sizes – 250ml and 750ml.
Both the packs are being manufactured by Coca-Cola bottling partners Moon Beverages and SLMG Beverages.
Excluding the caps and labels, the new bottles are entirely made using 100% food-grade rPET material.
Moon Beverages chairman Sanjeev Agarwal said: “Our new bottles made with food-grade rPET are recyclable and can become another bottle, giving it another life. Recycled PET is a big move in the right direction to embrace plastic circularity in India.”
According to Coca-Cola India, the process of recycling plastic for manufacturing these bottles is in compliance with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) standards for food-grade recycled material.
The use of rPET material also helps minimise the requirement for virgin plastic for manufacturing PET Bottles.
The sustainable pack also comes with an on-pack call to action, with ‘Recycle Me Again’ and ‘100% recycled PET bottle’ messages printed on the bottles’ labels.
The printed messages are expected to help in driving consumer awareness.
The latest move further reinforces Coca-Cola India's commitment to the transition towards a more sustainable and greener future, while contributing to the circular economy.
In February 2022, the Coca-Cola Company announced its new target to make 25% of its beverage packaging across its brand portfolio reusable by 2030.
Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia Technical and Innovation vice-president Enrique Ackermann said: “We are working to increase recycled content in our packaging, expand our use of refillable bottles, and to collect packaging for recycling through our World Without Waste initiative.
“We also do research for new solutions for packaging. This expansion by Moon Beverages and SLMG Beverages underscores Coca-Cola India's steadfast commitment to sustainability and its dedication to forging a more sustainable future.”
