Beverage retailer the Coca-Cola Company has teamed up with the City Plaza to launch Hong Kong's first-ever 'Recycle Bar'.
Launched in response to World Environment Day on 5 June, the Recycle Bar aims to raise awareness on the collection and recycling of used resources to reduce the city's carbon footprint.
Open from 2 until 11 June, the bar is decorated with more than 30 pieces of furniture, including a bar counter, bar stools, and tables and chairs, all of which are made out of a total of 18,000 recycled polyethylene terephthalate bottles (rPET).
In addition to furniture, rPET can be transformed into everyday accessories and has a wide range of uses.
The event will showcase a collection of rPET accessories collected from the US, Chinese mainland and Hong Kong markets.
Furthermore, the setup will serve as an educational exhibition by unveiling the procedures of PET recycling that occur inside a recycling facility.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience these recycling procedures firsthand by shredding PET bottles in a dedicated section of the exhibition.
Coca-Cola (Hong Kong and Macau) franchise operation director Marella Canepa Risso said: “In addressing environmental issues, we believe everyone should be accounted for and be accountable.
“Through public displays like Recycle Bar, as well as other roadshows and workshops that provide consumers with knowledge and experience in PET bottle recycling, we invite Hong Kong people to get inspired through seeing how used PET bottles can be given a new life - again and again - if returned and recycled properly.
“We encourage our consumers to become aware of their recycling habits – and to change them if necessary – thus partnering with us in helping to build a World Without Waste.”
In May this year, Coca-Cola introduced a new reuse programme that signalled its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, Barron’s reported.
