Cosmo Specialty Chemicals has launched new oil- and grease-resistant (OGR) barrier coatings for sustainable packaging.
Claimed to be eco-friendly, these barrier coatings are designed as alternatives to traditional polyethylene (PE) coatings, which are being phased out due to environmental concerns.
The company launched two grades of OGR coatings - OGR 145B and OGR 145S - to cater to different industry requirements. These water-based formulations are said to support the packaging industry's shift towards green manufacturing practices.
The OGR 145B variant is said to be a non-heat-sealable coating with excellent oil and grease resistance, making it ideal for food packaging.
The coating provides compatibility with various coating applications, anti-blocking features, and zero volatile organic compound emissions.
Additionally, it complies with US Food and Drug Administration standards for direct food contact. In contrast, the OGR 145S solution offers heat-sealing capabilities, making it suitable for paper cup production.
This variant ensures strong paper-to-paper bonds and provides resistance against water, moisture, oil, and grease. It is also versatile in application, compatible with gravure, flexo, and air knife coating methods, and also meets food-grade safety standards.
Cosmo Specialty Chemicals business head Raj Sharma said: “Our new range of OGR barrier coatings reflects Cosmo Specialty Chemicals' commitment to innovation and sustainability.
“By developing eco-friendly alternatives that maintain high-performance standards, we are addressing the current market demands and anticipated future needs. These solutions deliver exceptional barrier properties while supporting our customers' environmental goals and regulatory compliance requirements.”
