Global packaging solution provider Coveris has announced an investment to increase the production capacity for medical device packaging at its sites in Rohrdorf and Halle, Germany.

In the coming months, the company is investing more than €8m ($8.62m) to upgrade and expand its medical device production lines, thereby responding to the increasing demand for high-quality medical packaging solutions.

Coveris plans to install two new pouch lines and one header bag line by late 2024 at its Rohrdorf site.

The new pouch and bag lines are said to be technologically similar to the existing capabilities at the facility and will improve service.

The Rohrdorf facility, operational since May 2021, is claimed to comply with the highest medical packaging production requirements, including ISO Class 7 certification.

Meanwhile, Coveris will add a new cast extrusion line at the Halle site to bolster its medical packaging capacity.

The Halle site is expected to commence commercial production with the new extrusion line at the beginning of 2025.

Coveris CEO Christian Kolarik said: "We are investing in site upgrades to further strengthen our medical segment and continue answering growing customer needs for high-performance medical packaging. A clean and safe production environment is extremely important for this sector, but sustainability is also key.

“The new cast line supports the development of innovative monomaterial-based, recyclable and sustainable flexible packaging solutions for the medical industry. Additionally, both facilities are functioning with our No Waste strategy in mind, operating on electricity from renewable resources."

Last month, Coveris announced an expansion of its barrier film capabilities with an investment in vacuum skin packaging production.
