European packaging company Coveris has partnered with Notpla, a sustainable packaging producer, to provide takeaway boxes for an upcoming major sporting event in Vienna.

Under the partnership, Coveris will operate as the print and packaging partner for Notpla’s new takeaway cardboard boxes.

The packaging includes Notpla’s barrier coating, which is made using a combination of seaweed and plant extracts and is considered safe for food contact.

The coating serves as a more sustainable alternative to plastic and is applied to the sustainably sourced cardboard in order to deliver water and grease resistance.

Boxes with this coating are also recyclable and can naturally biodegrade within four to six weeks, if and when they are put into alternative waste streams.

These new takeaway boxes will debut at the Open ATP 500 tennis competition in Vienna, Austria.

Sponsored by Erste Bank, the tournament is scheduled to take place between 23 and 29 October this year.

Notpla’s packaging for this tournament is being rolled out in collaboration with online food and delivery brand Lieferando, which is a part of Just Eat Takeaway.

Throughout the week-long tournament, the packaging will be offered via the Lieferando app.

Notpla co-founder and co-CEO Pierre Paslier said: “Providing our plastic-free takeaway boxes at Erste Bank Vienna Open ATP tennis competition, is a big win for the company, making the match day experiences more sustainable for both the supporters and the vendors.”

The latest effort is also in line with Coveris’ own sustainability strategy, ‘No Waste’, launched by its leadership team in Vienna.

Coveris Food-on-the-Move sales director Paul Robertson added: “With aligning sustainability goals, we are very proud to continue our work with Notpla as their print and packaging partner for takeaway boxes.

“It’s exciting to see the growth of Notpla internationally as they continue to address packaging waste challenges within food-to-go and foodservice sectors which also supports Coveris’ sustainability vision, No Waste.”

Understanding the role and impact of the metaverse in the packaging sector

Per GlobalData analysis, the South-East Asia construction industry in 2023 is dominated by Indonesia, though the country will see a slowdown compared to 2022 due to elevated building material prices, weak commercial property demand, high interest rates and a softening of external demand. The construction industry in the Philippines is estimated to register a AAGR of 7.2% between 2024 and 2027, supported by the government’s focus on the development of the country’s rail and road transport and energy infrastructure.
