Food production and distribution company Del Monte Foods has highlighted its environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress, including its push for sustainable packaging.

In line with Global Reporting Initiative and Science Based Target initiative industry standards, Del Monte Foods' 2023 ESG report maps progress across the company's three ESG focus areas: Nourishing the Planet, Nourishing People and Nourishing Communities.

Under Nourishing the Planet, its packaging progress includes the incorporation of post-consumer resin in plastic beverage cups. This marks progress towards the company's goal to include 25% recycled content in its plastic packaging.

By 2030, Del Monte Foods aims to make 100% of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable.

Del Monte Foods president and CEO Greg Longstreet commented: "At a time when concern over global resources and food insecurity are on the rise, I'm proud to lead a company that is committed to reducing our impact.”

Director of environmental, social and governance Molly Laverty added: "Sustainability is not only good for the planet - it's simply good business. This report reflects our dedication to integrating our purpose into every aspect of our operations as we continue to do our part to build a more sustainable future for generations to come."

In early 2024, American non-profit organisation Consumer Reports found high levels of phthalate chemicals in Del Monte's canned sliced peaches.

The company states on its website that the alternative lining materials used for its cans are polyester and vinyl, which comply with all US Food and Drug Administration and European Food Safety Authority standards and do not contain phthalates.
