Domino's Pizza China (DPC) Dash has announced a 4% reduction in the proportion of non-biodegradable plastic packaging as a percentage of its total packaging materials purchased in 2023, down from 16% in 2020.
This development was highlighted in the company's 2023 environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report.
DPC Dash is Domino's Pizza's exclusive master franchisee in the Chinese mainland, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, and the Macau Special Administrative Region of China.
Through its Packaging Management Policy, the company has been promoting the reduction of packaging use while increasing the recyclability and biodegradability of its materials.
DPC Dash claimed that it achieved 100% biodegradable and environmentally friendly tableware during the year.
The company also offered fully recyclable tableware for dine-in customers and launched reusable bags for some of its new stores in 2023.
In its central kitchens, the business has reportedly eliminated single-use packaging and is now using reusable containers for food ingredients such as pizza dough, pasta, and rice.
Since 2021, it has introduced lighter pizza boxes and, from 2022, lighter napkins.
Efforts to optimise the design of the napkins and boxes have resulted in reduced paper usage, according to the company.
The company has also experimented with transporting bulk goods in recyclable crates, further reducing its packaging use.
In its ESG report, DPC Dash said: "We look for opportunities to be more sustainable by working with suppliers to reduce our use of packaging and switch to more sustainable materials. Besides, we are dedicated to finding solutions with the lowest environmental impact without compromising the quality of our product."
