DS Smith, a sustainable fibre-based packaging company, has launched Shop.able Carriers, a new line of recyclable and reusable boxes designed to transport groceries.

The new boxes are an eco-friendly alternative to plastic shopping bags, featuring the company's patented Greencoat coating technology, which is food-safe and water-resistant.

Shop.able Carriers is a durable and stackable solution line that aims to offer consumers a convenient and sustainable option for their everyday grocery shopping needs.

The carriers are made from renewable resources, boasting a 100% recyclability rate.

An unnamed US supermarket chain, which is the first to adopt the Shop.able Carriers line, is set to replace up to 100,000 plastic bags in its first year as a result of the transition.

Supermarkets have the option to customise the boxes with their branding and can even include sponsored logos and messages from partner brands.

Retailing at a price point comparable to reusable plastic totes, each Shop.able Carrier has the potential to replace between five to seven plastic bags.

DS Smith Global Customer director Steve Cooper said: "The Shop.able Carrier product line gives consumers the ability to help remove the billions of plastic bags used across the United States each year while at the same time delivering convenience and sustainability to consumers’ day-to-day shopping experience.

“This kind of innovative, sustainable packing solution is what more communities need to stem the tide of hard-to-recycle plastics and move away from single-use plastic bags.”

The introduction of Shop.able Carriers coincides with legislative actions in 18 US states banning or reducing plastic bag usage.

Earlier this month, DS Smith announced the launch of its seafood box, DryPack, in the US market.
