Recycled paper manufacturer Saica Group has received a silver medal from EcoVadis, a company that provides green ratings to businesses, for its improved sustainability efforts.

The EcoVadis assessment platform rates the sustainability of global supply chains in more than 75,000 companies all over the world.

The platform measures companies’ environmental, social and governance credentials through 21 sustainability criteria with a particular focus on four performance areas, namely environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

Saica achieved a total of 68 points this year, driven by its improvements in labour and human rights and sustainable procurement, where it gained ten points respectively.

The company also improved by two levels on the comprehensive carbon-management measures it reportedly implemented across its operations.

Saica, in a statement, said: “Participating in the EcoVadis ratings is just one of the many ways Saica Group chooses to measure and demonstrate its sustainability progress.

“Along with the publication of Saica’s sustainability report and its active participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Saica Group is clear in its commitment to become internationally recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable organisations.”

Saica manufactures recycled paper for corrugated boards in Europe, with an annual production capacity of 3.3 million tonnes.

The company primarily focuses on four business segments, namely Saica Paper, Saica Natur, Saica Pack, and Saica Flex. It employs more than 10,000 employees across Europe and the US.

In August 2023, Saica entered an agreement to acquire a minority stake in Belgian corrugated cardboard company Pacapime.
