Sustainable drinks producer and co-packer Broadland Drinks has signed a paper bottle contract with packaging company Frugalpac and Journey’s End.

The contract is said to make Broadland Drinks the largest filler of Frugal Bottles, a low-carbon paper wine and spirits bottle, in the UK.

This is expected to lead to mass volume filling of the bottles that will enable UK retailers and on-trade to stock more paper bottles.

As part of the contract, Broadland will fill and distribute Interpunkt's wines in collaboration with Journey’s End Vineyards.

Journey’s End will then expand these Interpunkt in Frugal Bottles in the UK market and elsewhere.

Frugal Bottles, which are produced by Frugalpac in Ipswich, UK, comprise 94% recycled paperboard and are said to be five times lighter than a standard glass bottle, weighing just 83g and holding 84% less carbon by comparison.

Since 2020, Frugal Bottle has been implemented by more than 35 drinks producers on 128 different stock-keeping units of wines, spirits, and olive oils.

The partnership comes shortly after Frugalpac confirmed the second sale of its Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine to California’s Monterey Wine Company in North America.

Frugalpac is also supplying its alternative paper bottles to Liverpool Philharmonic, a music organisation based in England.
