Gerresheimer is expanding the share of green electricity supply at its Momignies site in Belgium with the installation of a 2.3MWp photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system.

The PV system is expected to generate approximately 2,100MWh of solar power annually. It spans more than 15,000m², covering the roof of the site's production hall.

This is designed to meet nearly all the site's electricity needs, with any excess energy during peak production times fed into the public grid.

Gerresheimer's commitment to sustainability is further highlighted by its plan to increase the share of renewable electricity at the Momignies site to approximately 25% by the end of this year.

The proportion of energy from renewable sources already reached 45.6% across Gerresheimer's 35 global production sites by the end of last year.

The installation of the PV system aligns with the company's broader sustainability goals, which include switching to 100% renewable electricity by 2030 as part of its 'formula g' corporate strategy.

The Momignies site, which employs roughly 750 people, is equipped to produce and decorate glass flacons and jars as primary packaging for perfume, skin and body care products.

The company makes use of up to 40% post-consumer recycled glass for producing this glass packaging.

This practice not only conserves resources but also reduces energy consumption in manufacturing primary packaging solutions.

Gerresheimer CEO Dietmar Siemssen said: “The photovoltaic system in Momignies is a great example of how we are gradually advancing our sustainability goals.

“We are increasing the share of green energy in the electricity supply to our production sites while reducing our CO₂ [carbon dioxide] emissions in the process. Gerresheimer also benefits economically from these projects.”

In May 2024, Gerresheimer Glas, a subsidiary of Gerresheimer, agreed to acquire Blitz LuxCo, the holding company of Bormioli Pharma.
