Globe revises sustainability policy to focus on circularity

The move is set to help the company meet the Philippines' new EPRA legislation.

Philippino telecommunications company Globe has revised its environmental sustainability policy to improve its stance on circularity and responsible production.

The updated policy streamlines the importance of a circular system and encourages carbon reduction, sustainable production, responsible consumption, resource efficiency, and comprehensive waste management strategies.

All these efforts are in line with the Philippines' Extended Producer Responsibility Act (EPRA) of 2022, which requires large industries and companies in the country to handle their plastic packaging waste efficiently.

Under the EPRA, it is mandatory for relevant companies to recover 20% of the plastic packaging waste they put into the market in 2022.

This given target recovery rate is projected to increase to 80% by 2028.

Globe chief sustainability and corporate communications officer Yoly Crisanto said: “Globe stands at the forefront of adopting sustainable practices in our operations. We are taking this a notch higher with an enhanced environmental policy on circularity which aligns our processes and products with the call for more responsible consumption.”

“Our circularity initiatives will include our ecosystem of brands to help habituate our customers to sustainable practices.”

In 2022, Globe’s circularity initiatives included the deployment of 'Eco-SIM', made using 100% recycled materials, for all the new post-paid accounts created last year.

The company has also launched a more sustainable packaging design for its GFiber Prepaid Wi-Fi product range.

This packaging can be repurposed into a laptop stand, which will further extend the life cycle of the packaging.

Globe’s near-future plans also include switching to a more recyclable packaging material for all of its remaining Globe At Home products.

Furthermore, the company has implemented various efforts to minimise plastic and paper waste, including the launch of the 'WasSUP' programme to help its employees and concessionaires to adopt sustainable practices.
