The winner of Google’s Single-Use Plastics Challenge is cookie and brownie producer Homefree, a certified B Corporation.

Starting in April 2023, the Single-Use Plastics Challenge was hosted in collaboration with food service partners and allowed companies to test their solutions in Google’s US-based cafes and microkitchens.

Finalists then pitched their products to Google and global food operators to scale them across Google’s US offices.

The recognition highlights Homefree’s efforts in sustainability, which include offering bulk options to reduce overall packaging and transitioning to wrap made with 53% reworked food-grade materials to divert waste from landfills.

The cookie boxes are made with local EcoVadis Platinum-rated fibre and printed using wind power.

Homefree founder and president Jill Robbins commented: "For an internationally recognised company and their foodservice partners to commit time, resources and support to sustainability efforts and innovations is how powerful, rapid change is created. The potential scale of the impact makes me feel hopeful. We're grateful and proud to be part of this as a Single-Use Plastics Challenge winner."

Google is reportedly working to map out the types of single-use plastic products purchased throughout its supply chain and has partnered with distributors on reusable, durable containers to transport goods.
