Fibre-based packaging company Graphic Packaging has teamed up with healthy eating outlet Picadeli to develop a new range of plastic-free paperboard lids.

The new paperboard lids will replace Picadeli’s entire line of plastic lids for its paper-based salad bowls, potentially eliminating 250 tonnes of plastic annually from its supply chain.

According to Graphic, the new lids are made from renewable plant-based fibres and are recyclable in household paper waste streams.

The solution also features a secure snap closure system, which is seen as an upgrade of Picadeli’s previous solution.

Graphic Tibro AB managing director Åke Larsson said: “Everything we do, we do for our customers, and so it’s always pleasing to develop innovations that deliver on our customers’ expectations so emphatically.

“The new lids offer the functionality required for Picadeli to eliminate plastic salad bowl lids from their supply chain. They also offer great branding benefits via high-quality printing onto the lid using water-based inks.”

The new lids feature bold, playful messages to promote Picadeli while improving its customers’ engagement.

In addition, Graphic optimised the design so that it is suitable in both chilled and moisture-rich environments.

Picadeli sourcing and supply chain head Henrik Åkerman said: “We are committed to preserving as many of our planet’s precious resources as possible, while also producing high-quality, functional packaging for our consumers to enjoy.

"With that in mind, we are delighted to introduce this new lid to our packaging. It fulfils all our needs and helps us reduce the amount of plastic in our portfolio, in line with modern consumer demands.”

Picadeli has outlets in both Europe and the US, with more than 2,000 salad bars across Europe.
