Two Welsh councils in UK, Blaenau Gwent Council and Powys County Council, have entered into a new five-year agreement with Grundon Waste Management for the collection and recycling of household aerosols.

This contract, valued at £400,000 ($500,000) aligns with the latest Welsh Government regulations, which came into effect on 6 April 2024, requiring the separate collection and recycling of aerosols.

The new agreement is an extension of the four-year collaboration, during which Blaenau Gwent Council has recycled two million aerosols.

Powys County Council also contributed an additional 100,000 aerosols to the recycling effort under the previous partnership.

Grundon's advanced facility has recycled more than 200 tonnes of metal from these aerosols, with all components of the aerosols being recovered or recycled, including repurposing the propellant gases for use in other industries including refrigeration systems and air-conditioning.

The contract with Blaenau Gwent Council is worth approximately £75,000 annually, while the agreement with Powys County Council amounts to around £5,000 per year.

These contracts place both the councils at the forefront of sustainable waste management in compliance with new governmental mandates.

Grundon hazardous waste commercial manager Paul McConaghy said: “We’re delighted to have extended our partnership with Blaenau Gwent Council and Powys County Council to continue recycling the thousands of aerosols that are thrown away every day from households across South Wales. By doing so, they have shown they have led the way ahead of the new legislation.

“Our capability to recycle or repurpose every part of aerosols supports the circular economy by ensuring nothing is wasted and assists the councils in meeting their sustainability goals while remaining at the forefront of environmental progress.”

Grundon's aerosol recycling capabilities are part of its efforts to collaborate with local councils to find innovative and sustainable waste management solutions.
