GWP Group advances sustainability with investment in solar energy

The company's transition to renewable energy is set to lead to carbon savings of approximately 70t annually.

UK-based packaging manufacturer GWP Group has made a £235,000 ($323,040) investment in solar panel installation at its Cricklade manufacturing site.

The contract for the solar installation was provided to renewable energy company CleanEarth after a due diligence and tendering process.

CleanEarth completed the installation of the 380kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system earlier this month on two units at GWP’s production facility.

This installation is expected to generate 40% of the packaging company's total electricity needs.

The transition to renewable energy should result in carbon savings of approximately 70 tonnes (t) per year, as well as 1,750t over the system's expected 25-year lifespan, according to the company.

GWP managing director Ruth Cook said: "Although as part of the packaging industry, we have always been focused on how we can reduce the environmental impact of our customers’ packaging - through minimising material usage, efficient transport and innovative design - this project will be a real step forward for our own business.

"The carbon-free energy provided by installing these solar panels will have a significant impact on the sustainability of our operations."

The company, which is part of Macfarlane Packaging, has renewed its focus on reducing environmental impact across its operation, to endorse the group’s environmental, social, and governance strategy.

In addition to these solar panels, GWP has undertaken multiple sustainability initiatives such as converting to LED lighting, enhancing waste recycling efficiency, and introducing fully electric delivery vans.

The company's corrugated packaging is also claimed to be Forest Stewardship Council-certified by default.

Looking ahead, GWP has plans to improve wastewater management and maintain its dedication to sustainable packaging accreditations.

Macfarlane Packaging sustainability head David Patton said: "A key area we are focused on across our business is to maximise the energy we use from renewable sources. One of the ways we are doing this is by installing solar panels across our group operations.

"It made complete sense to undertake our next installation at GWP, where many customers are already receiving packaging delivered by our fully electric delivery vans."

In May this year, Macfarlane Group reported a reduction of 1,420t or 22% in absolute carbon emissions (scope 1 and 2) in 2023.
