IFCO develops smart reusable fish crate

The Marina fish crate was designed by IFCO in collaboration with the fishing industry to improve cold chain management.

Reusable packaging producer IFCO has launched Marina, a smart reusable crate for the fish and seafood supply chain.

Featuring track-and-trace Bluetooth low energy tags and QR codes, the crate enables real-time data collection to improve the cold chain management of fresh and chilled products from shipping to all points of sale (POS).

Marina is available exclusively through the IFCO SmartCycle circular pooling system, allowing the crates to be reused up to 120 times. Empty crates can be returned, reused and, once they can no longer be used, sustainably recycled.

IFCO ensures that the reusable fish crates are washed according to international standards of food safety and hygiene and efficiently pooled for sharing and reuse. As required in the fishing industry, IFCO also ensures a response time and delivery within 24 hours.

The crates are nestable when empty and securely stackable when full with uniform dimensions and double-wall isothermal construction for insulation at controlled temperatures.

The company is capitalising on increasingly tightening regulations and the introduction of single-use expanded polystyrene bans.

IFCO vice-president of ESG [environmental, social and governance] and strategic marketing Inigo Canalejo commented: "We see it as our responsibility to improve the environmental sustainability of every category of the fresh grocery supply chain.”

IFCO recently partnered with Rimi, a retailer operating in the Baltics, to drive sustainable change in the region’s fresh grocery sector.
