Innovia Films, a material science company and producer of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films, has introduced a new film for ice-cream flow wrap packaging.

Named VL40, the white, ultra-low-density cavitated film is optimised to function on the high-speed flow wrap machines used by European ice-cream manufacturers, offering ease of printing and sealing.

The film, which features a low sealing threshold suitable for ice-cream flow wrap applications, is engineered to be largely unaffected by climate variations, although it is recommended not to store it at temperatures exceeding 40°C.

When stored properly, the film is believed to maintain its quality for up to six months.

Developed at the Innovia Films facility in Płock, Poland, VL40 has undergone successful trials.

Innovia Films in Poland is currently offering the film for testing purposes.

Innovia Films Płock general manager Piotr Piasny said: "Our film is a high-gloss white coextruded OPP film with a very wide heat seal range. We made some significant changes to our extrusion lines to be able to deliver this specific film grade that is ideal for ice-cream sandwiches and popsicles. The team did a great job in a very short time.

“Amongst other features it offers a very high puncture resistance which is important to preserve the valuable product and prevent food waste. The printability of the product means you can achieve a superior graphic appeal, and the film provides an easy-to-open package.”

Earlier this year, Innovia Films, a division of CCL Industries, introduced a new floatable polyolefin shrink film designed for light-sensitive products.
