Kemira boosts bleaching production capacity in Brazil

The investment will increase Kemira’s sodium chlorate production capacity by more than 10%.

Kemira, a provider of sustainable chemical solutions, has announced an investment aimed at expanding the sodium chlorate production capacity at its Ortigueira facility in Brazil.

This strategic move is set to support the growing bleached pulp market in South America.

The expansion project is set to be operational by the last quarter (Q4) of 2024 and is set to increase the plant's capacity by more than 10%.

Kemira Pulp & Paper president Harri Eronen said: “This investment strongly indicates our commitment to our pulp and paper customers in the region. They trust Kemira because of our strong know-how in fibre processing and bleaching applications, which produce strong, bright and clean pulp for paper, board and tissues.”

Sodium chlorate, a crucial component in the production of chlorine dioxide, is extensively used in pulp mills.

Known for preserving pulp yield and enhancing strength more effectively than other oxidants, the chemical stands as a key bleaching agent.

Kemira's proprietary process for manufacturing sodium chlorate uses renewable energy, aligning with the industry's shift towards sustainable production methods.

The company noted that the expansion is timely as industries are increasingly moving away from fossil-based materials for products such as packaging and single-use items.

“An application area that is particularly exciting for our customers is moulded fibre. That’s because the transition from single-use plastics to renewable alternatives is driving a need for safe and cost-efficient moulded packaging produced from renewable resources. It’s exciting to play a critical role in helping to realise a more sustainable and circular future with our partners through our chemistry,” added Eronen.

In March this year, Kemira entered into a strategic partnership with PA Consulting to develop innovative renewable barrier coatings technology.
