Kolbus provides new Autobox AB300 box making machine to SMP

Installation of the new machine will offer enhanced automation capabilities.

British machinery manufacturing company Kolbus Autobox has announced providing a new Autobox AB300 box making machine to South East London-based company SMP Group.

According to a Kolbus LinkedIn post, the company has installed a new line box production line, AB300 with Automatic Feeder AF300, a MC300 Multicut module, and a self-rising scissor Lift.

This setup is expected to help SMP further increase the overall number of box styles that it can currently make.

Installation of the new machine will allow SMP to address the increasing demand for box making, the Packaging Portal’s report said.

It will provide enhanced automation capabilities along with higher speed and larger format, compared to the existing machine used by SMP.

All the additional setup, including the AF300 feeder, MC300 Multicut module, and self-rising scissor, will further eliminate the requirement of deploying an operator to manage large and awkward sheets for boxes.

The report said that the Autobox AB300 and Multicut MC300, when combined together, offer inline capabilities of slotting, slitting, double creasing, and removing waste and hand holes, all in a single pass.

Kolbus’ AF300 automatic feeder helps in lifting the top sheet from a full pallet and guides in streamlining the process of handling large stock boards for boxes.

The latest milestone builds on the existing partnership between the two companies.

In 2016, SMP said it first acquired an Autobox Boxer BX200 machine from Kolbus, which is still operational and works on a 'continuous' basis.

The Packaging Portal quoted SMP Finishing department manager Stephen Jepp as saying: “We have been operating the Boxer for many years now and it has been one of, if not, quickest return on investment we have ever had.

“Although we bought the original machine to support our existing machinery, it quickly became our busiest. Since install, we have put thousands of boxes through the Autobox AB300.

“The operators love it and can already see the benefits of having an automated, larger format, quicker machine. Jobs are being completed considerably faster, making for even more satisfied customers.”

Metaverse in the packaging sector

Many of the vital metaverse technologies are already being used or piloted by packaging companies, who have brought together AI, AR, VR, cloud, the IoT, and other technologies to monitor and maintain key assets remotely. The sector could also use immersive metaverse solutions to optimize packaging design and quality control—testing prototypes in a virtual world before bringing them to market. Another disruptive benefit of the metaverse will be using underlying blockchain and digital twin technologies to assist in creating more transparent and traceable supply chains.
