Lidl GB, the British segment of German supermarket chain Lidl, is introducing changes to the labelling of its yoghurt and fresh milk ranges to tackle food waste.

The retailer will replace its ‘Use By’ labels with ‘Best Before’ labels.

Lidl GB has already begun rolling out the updated milk packaging across stores in England and Wales, with plans to add the update to yoghurts from early next year.

The changes will strengthen the retailer’s existing effort to tackle food waste.

Among Lidl's initiatives undertaken to address food waste in outlets include the introduction of its Too Good to Waste boxes.

These boxes help cut food waste by 17,000 tonnes every year by selling 5kg of surplus fruit and vegetables for £1.50.

Lidl GB Buying head Richard Inglis said: “At Lidl, we know that a lot of perfectly good milk and yoghurt is being thrown away because of ‘Use By’ dates. It therefore makes total sense to us to make the switch to ‘Best Before’ so that shoppers can use their own judgement on whether their milk or yoghurt is good to consume.

“We’ve got a long record of making positive change to reduce food waste, and this latest step builds on our commitment to helping households tackle food waste at home.”

In August this year, Lidl unveiled its plans to roll out fully compostable teabags, which will enable the retailer to redirect approximately 800 million teabags away from traditional waste bins and, consequently, landfills.
