Clean technology company Loop Industries’ polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin has been validated for packaging applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

The resin was tested by the US Pharmacopeia and European Pharmacopeia to ensure that it maintains the highest levels of integrity without compromising the safety and efficacy of the products inside.

The test results confirmed that Loop’s 100% recycled virgin PET can serve as a sustainable alternative for pharmaceutical companies and address the increasing demand for more environmentally friendly options in the industry.

In addition to pharmaceutical packaging, the resin is suitable for cosmetic packaging, food-grade packaging, and polyester fibre textile applications.

Loop Industries Science and Innovation vice-president Adel Essaddam said: "Our Infinite Loop technology upcycles the lowest quality PET and polyester fibre waste into 100% recycled PET resin of the highest purity, meeting the strict standards of the pharmaceutical industry.”

Compared to virgin PET made from fossil fuels, Loop’s material can save up to 360,000 tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide per year.

Loop Industries founder and CEO Daniel Solomita said: “This validation further reaffirms the quality and purity of our 100% recycled virgin-quality PET and we are proud to offer a sustainable packaging solution that meets the demanding standards of the pharmaceutical industry."

Loop Industries specialises in manufacturing recycled PET plastic and polyester fibre to expedite the circular plastics economy.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages Packaging Industry Dynamics

In 2022, the soft drinks sector held the largest non-alcoholic beverages packaging market share, while the hot drinks sector is forecasted to register the fastest growth during 2022–27. Rigid plastics are usually a preferred choice in the non-alcoholic beverages industry because of their portability, convenience, and lightweight nature that facilitate on-the-go consumption.
